Man charged after toddler shot in head

Davaris A. Washington, 38, of the 7800 block of South Langley Avenue, was charged with multiple felonies after police said he accidentally shot an 18-month-old child in the head at 12:15 a.m. Sept. 26 in an apartment in the 6400 block of South Mozart Street.

Police responding to a report of shots found the injured child, who was taken to a hospital in critical condition. Police said a handgun was found at the scene.

Police did not provide details of the shooting. According to published reports, Washington said he was holding a cordless drill in one hand and a handgun in the other. He meant to squeeze the trigger on the drill to start it but pulled the trigger on the gun, which fired three times, according to those reports.

Washington was charged with unlawful use of a weapon, reckless conduct causing great bodily harm, possession of a firearm by a felon and reckless discharge of a firearm endangering a child. He is being held without bond in Cook County Jail and is scheduled to appear in court Oct. 15.

Woman charged with threatening neighbor with bat, knife

London S. Williams, 30, of the 5400 block of South Long Avenue, was charged with two counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon after an altercation with neighbors at 4:46 p.m. Sept. 27.

A neighbor told police she had complained to Williams that Williams’ children repeatedly entered her yard and rang her doorbell. The neighbor said Williams came outside with a baseball bat and threatened to beat her, then returned with a knife and threatened to kill her.

Man arrested on retail theft warrants

Malik Williams-Tyler, 30, of the 3900 block of West 71st Street, was arrested at his home at 8:24 a.m. Sept. 26 on two outstanding warrants for felony retail theft.

Police said the warrants stem from two separate incidents in which Williams-Tyler left the Walgreens at 7041 S. Pulaski Road with shopping carts full of merchandise worth more than $300.

He was also charged with possession of drug paraphernalia. Police said he was carrying a pipe used to smoke crack cocaine.

Man charged with heroin possession

John T. Martin, 30, of the 3700 block of West 107th Street, was charged with possession of a controlled substance and other offenses after a traffic stop at 2:56 a.m. Sept. 21 in the 5300 block of South Nashville Avenue.

Police said Martin’s vehicle was parked across an intersection and he was grinding cannabis in the front seat. Officers ordered him out of the vehicle and took him into custody. During a search, police said, they found bags containing about 2 grams of heroin in his pockets.

Martin was also charged with driving on a suspended license, suspended vehicle registration, no insurance and obstructing traffic.

Man charged with domestic battery

Fabian Ospina Jurado, 32, was charged with domestic battery after police responded to a disturbance at his home in the 6300 block of South Artesian Avenue at 6:30 a.m. Sept. 21.

Police said Ospina Jurado punched his 36-year-old boyfriend in the chest and stomach and waved a box cutter while threatening to injure him.

Driver, passenger charged with fighting officers

Two people were charged after police said they fought with officers during a traffic stop at 8:12 p.m. Sept. 23 in the 2800 block of West 71st Street.

Police said they stopped the driver, Calvin A. Williams, 28, of the 2100 block of West 71st Street, for using a cellphone while driving. Police said he was uncooperative and attacked officers.

Williams was charged with illegal use of a cellphone while driving, two counts of obstructing identification and three counts of resisting arrest.

Police said his passenger, Yaveonna Yakira Appleton, 22, of the 3500 block of South Rhodes Avenue, ignored orders not to interfere with Williams’ arrest. Police said she pushed past officers, kicked one officer and struck him in the stomach, and kicked another officer in the leg.

Appleton was charged with two counts of aggravated battery of a police officer and resisting arrest.

Man charged with possessing stolen car, jewelry

Marco Lumpkins, 41, of the 8100 block of South Western Avenue, was charged with possession of a stolen vehicle after his arrest outside his home at 11:19 a.m. Sept. 23.

Police said officers looking for a car reported stolen found Lumpkins searching through it. He was already wanted on an outstanding warrant, police said.

Lumpkins was also charged with theft. Police said he was carrying a black bag containing jewelry taken from the car.

Police report information is provided by law enforcement agencies. Charges are not evidence of guilt. They are a record of police actions taken. Persons charged with a crime are presumed innocent until proved guilty in a court of law.
