Early in a game against visiting Brooks on Sept. 19, Goode quarterback Jordan Boston scooted in for an apparent touchdown.
But the play had been whistled dead by an official who was deceived by Boston’s effective fake.
The Knights wound up scoring anyway and rolled to a 60-20 Public League Red Southwest win, so the earlier snafu — which the official apologized for — was just a funny footnote.
But Boston’s deception is no joke. It’s an integral part of Goode’s run-heavy offense.
“He faked the ref out today and messed up his touchdown,” Knights coach Terrence McClarn said of the junior. “But that’s how good he is with his fakes. He’s been working on this a lot. Like I said, as a freshman, he worked on it, picked it up nicely and just got better and better each year.”
Goode (3-1, 2-0) runs the ball more than 90% of the time, and used nine different ball carriers against Brooks.
“That’s more than usual,” McClarn said. “Usually it’s only three guys taking care of it. We had guys stepping up. More people learned the playbook and things of that nature, allowing us to give more people touches and open it up.”
Aedan Cleveland led the way, running 11 times for 192 yards and three touchdowns. The senior ran a punt back 75 yards for another score.
Boston also had 11 carries, finishing with 113 yards, and he completed 2 of 3 passes for 51 yards and a TD. That went to 5-10, 281-pound tight end Trenell Clark, who made a one-handed catch for a 23-yard score.
Caron Williams ran three times for 56 yards and a touchdown, and Gabriel Chambers-Crosby also had a rushing TD for the Knights.
Curie 28, Mather 8: Freshman quarterback Treyveon Townsend threw two touchdown passes to Harper Edwards and also ran for a TD as Curie (3-2, 1-1 Public League Red North) won on Sept. 19 at Winnemac Stadium. Jamari Green-Langley also scored for the Condors.
Kennedy 42, Solorio 0: Victor Sandoval ran 10 times for 110 yards and three touchdowns and also caught three passes for 45 yards and a score to lead Kennedy (5-0, 2-0 Public League White West) to a road win on Sept. 18.
Alex Hernandez completed 14 of 20 passes for 185 yards and two touchdowns, while Jacob Tunstill contributed four catches for 70 yards and a score. Sergio Medina had a pick-six and Christian Estrada had 12 tackles to lead the Crusaders defense.
Solorio is 0-3, 0-2.
Back of the Yards 1, Washington 0: Back of the Yards (2-3, 1-1 Public League Blue South) picked up a forfeit win.
