Sandburg boys basketball coach John Daniels is finalizing plans for the school’s charity shootout and is bringing some talented teams and individuals to Orland Park.
Among the teams at the Dec. 19 event are area squads Sandburg, Andrew, Stagg, Lyons and Brother Rice. Others entered include Hinsdale Central, Bolingbrook, Waubonsie Valley, Neuqua Valley and St. Patrick.
“It’s such a great event,” Daniels said. “There is great basketball — six of the teams could be in the top 20 in the Chicago area. Bolingbrook has one of the best players in the country (Brady Pettigrew, who is ranked as the nation’s No. 1 combo guard by ESPN). Look out for Andrew’s Ryan Dinnon — he’s going to be one of the best players in the area.
“Most important, the money will go to a great cause.”
That cause is still to be determined. Daniels said the Shriners Hospitals for Children and the St. Baldrick’s Foundation are the leading candidates.
Daniels said the goal is to raise $10,000.
Big volleyball performances
Lyons (15-1) won the 16-team Wheaton Classic as Taylor Carroll was named MVP. Teammates Julie Ahrens and Olivia Pora each were named to the all-tournament team.
St. Laurence (17-4) won the 16-team Spartan Classic at Oak Lawn. Aubrey Martinez was named MVP and Abby Ambrose was named to the all-tournament team.
Two-time defending Class 4A state champion Marist (14-2) tied for seventh in the 64-team Durango Fall Classic in Las Vegas. Taylor Berg was named to the all-tournament team.
SXU loses home opener
St. Xavier lost 59-17 to NAIA sixth-ranked Indiana Wesleyan in its home opener on Sept. 19 in a Mid-States Football Association crossover at Deaton Field in Chicago.
The Cougars (0-3) led 17-7 before being outscored 52-0 the rest of the way.
Former Mount Carmel quarterback Blainey Dowling threw for 175 yards and former Mount Carmel defensive back Owen Schickel had 14 tackles and two forced fumbles for the Cougars.
SXU visits Madonna (2-1) at 5 p.m. Sept. 26 in another crossover battle.
CSU loses to Butler
Chicago State (1-3) gave up 23 first-quarter points and lost 47-20 to Butler on Sept. 19 in Indianapolis.
Ashton Pennell threw for 180 yards and two touchdowns for the Cougars, who host Norfolk State at 6 p.m. Sept. 26 at SeatGeek Stadium in Bridgeview.
Fire report
The Chicago Fire lost 3-0 on Sept. 19 to MLS Eastern Conference leader Nashville.
The Fire (11-8-6) visits Charlotte at 6:30 p.m. on Sept. 26 at Bank of America Stadium.
The Fire II wrapped up their season with a 1-0 loss to Chattanooga FC on Sept. 20 in an MLS NEXT Pro match at SeatGeek Stadium. Chicago finished 10-12-6.
