Junior quarterback Jake Fleming threw two touchdown passes to his brother Conor, a sophomore receiver, as Marist opened its season with a 44-28 home win over Simeon on Aug. 22.
Jake Fleming finished 12-of-17 passing for 259 yards and three TDs, including one to Conor Hunt. Hunt ran 28 times for 136 yards and Conor Fleming had five catches for 74 yards. Billy Nitsche also ran for a score for the RedHawks.
It’s another chapter in the Fleming family saga at Marist. Their grandfather was in the school’s first graduating class in the 1960s and their dad Pat is the athletic director.
How long have they been tossing the football back and forth?
“I don’t even know,” Jake Fleming said. “It’s been years, close to 10 years. It’s great to put it all on display.”
Andrew 21, Oak Forest 18: Jimmy Reilly scored on a 1-yard quarterback sneak with 17.9 seconds left to lift Andrew to the win. Reilly also scored on a 2-yard run earlier in the fourth quarter. Landon Paredes accounted for the T-bolts’ other touchdown with a 95-yard kickoff return in the third quarter.
Chicago Christian 14, Seneca 7: Tyce Hamstra threw a 7-yard TD pass to Harry Yonker and Emmet VanDellen had in two interceptions for Chicago Christian.
DePaul Prep 32, Richards 22: Pierre Ray took the opening kickoff 85 yards for a touchdown for Richards. Ray added an 8-yard TD reception on a pass from Eric Jacobs. Defensive end Sincere Harris picked off a pass in the end zone for a touchdown to account for the Bulldogs’ other points.
IC Catholic 35, Nazareth 21: First-year starting quarterback JJ Chapman passed for 303 yards and a 6-yard TD to Jackson Flickinger for Nazareth. Dylan Wellner and Jack Parisi added rushing TDs for the Roadrunners.
King 15, St. Laurence 14: Noah Taylor scored on a 1-yard TD run for St. Laurence and also threw for another score.
Lane 28, Shepard 21: Ashton Hite ran for a touchdown and threw to Brendin Thomas for another for Shepard. Evan Heiden recovered a punt blocked by Hassan Tahiru in the end zone for the Astros’ other TD. Elijah Motley and Xavier Exum picked off passes for Shepard while Julio Cabral recovered a fumble.
Lincoln-Way East 22, Brother Rice 21: Rocco Galasso was 16 of 29 passing for 170 yards and freshman Sam Holcomb was 11 of 15 for 119 yards for Brother Rice. Holcomb scored on a pair of 1-yard runs while also throwing a 10-yard TD to Jahon Wilson.
Lyons 24, Barrington 19: EJ Kuhlman ran 32 times for 132 yards to help the Lions prevail.
Oak Lawn 60, Wheeling 0: Jayden Schlosser (six carries, 49 yards) scored on runs of 12 and 2 yards while Mekhi Dawson (nine carries, 69 yards) added scoring runs of 2, 20 and 2 for the visiting Spartans. Jamari Sisson contributed TDs on runs of 56 and 12 yards, while Danny Strelow connected with Blake Hovanes on a 35-yard scoring strike. Linebacker Khalid Eid anchored Oak Lawn’s defense with three tackles for loss, two fumble recoveries and two sacks.
Plainfield East 49, Argo 0: Chance Sanders was 7 of 16 passing for 54 yards for Argo. Angel Vazquez had seven tackles.
Providence 28, St. Rita 21: John Fennell connected with TJ Burgos on TD passes of 37 and 35 yards for the Mustangs. Brandon Johnson Jr. added the other score for St. Rita on a 5-yard run.
