McCook will no longer charge charities $1,000 to conduct raffles in the village.
The old ordinance simply made no sense, Mayor Terrance Carr said.
The village board on Aug. 17 unanimously voted to end the practice.
“When you’re raising money, it’s kind of hard to do when you have to pay a $1,000 fee,” Carr said.
He said he has no idea why the $1,000 fee was ever adopted.
“A $1,000 fee. They raise $1,100 and they have to pay the village $1,000? What am I, a jerk?” Carr said.
