The Chicago Experience Concert and Fireworks Show scheduled for tonight in Palos Heights has been canceled because of a forecast calling for significant rain, lightning and thunderstorms.
The storms are expected to begin around 5 p.m. and continue through the evening, prompting city officials to cancel the event out of concern for the safety of residents, visitors, performers and staff.
Tonight’s fireworks show was originally scheduled for the Fourth of July but was postponed because of weather.
The city is exploring options to reschedule the concert and fireworks show. Officials are working with event organizers and vendors to determine a possible alternate date and said additional information will be released once plans are finalized.
The cancellation comes after weeks of preparation by the Palos Heights Parks and Recreation Department, city staff, performers and vendors.
City officials apologized for the disappointment and thanked everyone involved in preparing for the event.
Residents and visitors are encouraged to monitor weather conditions throughout the evening and take appropriate precautions.
