Donavan Charles Boardman, known to family and friends as Don, passed away on July 20, 2026, in Justice, Illinois, at the age of 99.
Born on May 1, 1927, in Dubuque, Iowa, Don lived a long life marked by devotion to family, service to his country, and a genuine love of the simple joys that brought people together. He was preceded in death by his parents, Otto and Vivian Boardman.
Don served his country honorably in the United States Army Air Corps for two years, answering the call to serve during a time of great need. After returning home, he built a long and steady career with General Motors, where he worked with dedication until retirement. He took pride in doing his work well and in providing for his family through years of faithful commitment.
Those who knew Don will remember him as a man who found joy in everyday moments. He loved to golf and was an enthusiastic sports fan, always ready to follow a game and share in the excitement of competition. One of his greatest pleasures was watching his grandchildren play their sports and cheering them on from the sidelines. His presence at those games was a source of encouragement and pride.
Don was a devoted father, grandfather, and brother. He is survived by his children, Robert Boardman and his wife Sharon, Sheila Hajduk and her husband John, Gilda Powers and her husband James, Travis Boardman and his wife Donna, and Troy Boardman and his wife Kerri.
He was a proud grandfather to Darren Boardman, Jaden Boardman, Hailie Boardman, Cole Boardman, Ellie Boardman, the late Christopher Boardman, Caris, Nicole, Michael, Robert Powers, Angela Randerson, Valerie Hajduk, and John Hajduk III.
He is also survived by his sister, Linda Dobias, and many extended family members. He was preceded in death by his sisters Jean Boardman and Doris Scolerie and his brother Junior Boardman.
Don lived a long life that reflected resilience, humility, and love. He was not a man who sought attention, but his steady presence left a lasting impression on those around him. He understood the importance of showing up, working hard, and being there for the people he loved. His family will remember his warm spirit, his interest in their lives, and the way he made ordinary moments feel meaningful.
Visitation: Friday, July 24, 2026, 4 to 8 p.m. at Damar-Kaminski Funeral Home & Crematorium, 7861 S. 88th Ave., Justice, Illinois.
