Rick Boehm retired as Palos Park’s village manager earlier this year.
But he has not retired from manning the grill at the village’s Hot Dog Day celebration, which he did again on July 15 at Village Green.
Boehm was actually smiling as he cooked up hundreds of hot dogs even though the temperature was in the 90s and the grill added to the heat.
Boehm has been the head chef at the event since it started in 2011. This was the 15th running of the event as it skipped 2020 due to the pandemic.
Whiskey River played country and rock music and because of the intense heat of the sun, when the band opened with “Life Is a Highway,” the prime seats were not in front of the stage, rather, they were far away near trees that provided shade.
Two people who dined in the sun, however, were Tom Costello and his 4-year-old daughter, Pearl.
“We’ve been coming here for a few years,” Tom said. “We like the music and the hot dogs…everyone is doing such a great job with these events even with the hot weather.”
