Two Palos Park police officers tag-teamed to save a woman’s life in May and on June 22, they were honored by the village council.

Officers Bob Kotsianis and Scott Van Wagner were recognized for their heroism at the council’s meeting at the Kaptur Center.

Police Commissioner Dan Polk said the police were summoned to a home on 126th Street because a woman, whose name has not been released, was having a heart attack.

“(Kotsianis) was the first to arrive on the scene and quickly determined the woman was in cardiac arrest and initiated lifesaving measures with CPR,” Polk said.

He said an automatic external defibrillator was brought to the scene. The AED treats people experiencing sudden cardiac arrest, Polk said.

“Officer Kostianas was soon joined by Officer Scott Van Wagner to provide CPR and use the AED unit on the woman,” Polk said. “The officers worked together to successfully restore the woman’s pulse before Fire District personnel arrived.”

Polk added that the woman was transported to Palos Northwestern Hospital.

“Officer Kotsianis, working along with Officer Van Wagner, worked in unison as a team effort to revive the fallen woman and allowed for her treatment at the hospital,” Polk said. “We pause to commend these police officers for their quick action and diligence in providing immediate medical care.

“Their actions reflect on their exemplary work in the finest tradition of police service.”

The cops were asked to say a few words.

“We appreciate the recognition and we’re very happy that lady was able to recover,” Kostianis said.

“Thank you – it’s an honor to serve,” Van Wagner added.

Palos Park officials were also thankful.

“Thank you for your quick thinking in saving that woman’s life,” Mayor Nicole Milovich-Walters said. “It’s amazing. Thank you, again.”
