Robert J. Rubel, known lovingly to all as Bob, passed away peacefully on June 8, 2026. He was 83.
Born on June 1, 1943, Bob was a man who knew duty, loyalty, and love, and he gave these gifts freely to all who knew him.
In 1966, Bob joined the Bedford Park Fire Department, answering a call to service that would become a defining chapter of his life. Rising through the ranks to become Fire Chief in 1976, Bob led with calm judgment and a heart that understood both the burden and the honor of responsibility. Until his retirement in 1998, he served with distinction, earning the respect of his fellow firefighters and the gratitude of the community he protected.
Beyond the firehouse, Bob found joy in the simple pleasures of life. He enjoyed Cubs baseball, hot rod cars, John Wayne movies, and his perfect grass. He also enjoyed playing the slots, and above all, Bob treasured time spent with his family. He was never happier than when they were all together.
Bob was the beloved husband of Gail Rubel, and their marriage of 61 years stood as a testament to devotion, companionship, and shared endurance through the seasons of life. Together they built a family rooted in love and strengthened by memory.
He is survived by his daughters, Jody Litkenhus and her husband John, and Patti Gil and her husband Frank. He also leaves behind his grandsons Jake (Ali), Jared (Breanne), Josh, and Chase, and his granddaughter Audrey. Bob also leaves behind his loving sister Esther and his two nieces, Dawn and Dee. He was further blessed with five great-grandchildren, who will carry forward the stories of his life.
Those who loved Bob will not only remember what he did, but how he made them feel. Bob had the gift of humor and always made a gathering more entertaining. In Bob, there was a steadiness that comforted, and a presence that reassured. Though he has departed, the mark of his character endures, woven into the hearts of his family, friends, and all who were fortunate enough to know him.
May Robert J. Rubel be remembered with gratitude and affection, and may his memory remain as lasting as the love he gave so freely. As his favorite cowboy John Wayne once said: “A man’s gotta do what a man’s gotta do.” That’s what Bob did.
