La Grange officially proclaimed Sunday, June 14, as Race Amity Day, joining a national initiative to reflect on racial unity and community diversity.
The Village Board on June 8 unanimously approved the proclamation, which invites residents to participate in the observance on the second Sunday in June.
The proclamation stems from the Towards E Pluribus Unum initiative of the National Center for Race Amity, which traces its roots to a 1921 national convention in Washington, D.C. — the first gathering dedicated to amity between the races.
The initiative encourages communities nationwide to reflect on “the beauty and richness of the diverse peoples of this great nation.”
La Grange’s proclamation notes that the village is home to a diverse population: approximately 22.3 percent of residents — more than 3,500 people — identify as Black, Hispanic, Asian American, or multiracial.
The Community Diversity Group collaborated with village staff on the proclamation. The group is also organizing related events, including a partnership with Tate’s Ice Cream Shop.
Between June 13 and June 27, a special flavor called “Cherry Vibe” will be available, with proceeds benefiting Laced Up Athletics, which works with minority youths.
Laced Up Athletics will also host a Juneteenth celebration from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on June 19 at the Corral, next to the LT South campus, featuring youth and family activities.
