Happy 100th anniversary to Midway Airport. It started small and is now a major international airport. Our neighborhood airport was established in 1926. This is the same year my mom was born. It was a good year.

Clearing Branch Library at 6423 W. 63rd Place will be celebrating Chicago’s first airport on Saturday, June 6, from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. All teens and adults are invited to learn about Midway Airport history, listen to historians, and view photos and documents. Call for more information at 312-747-5657.

The 11th Annual Archer Car Show will take place at 6800 W. Archer Ave. on Friday, June 5, from 6 to 9 p.m. I’ve been told that past Archer Car Shows are always fun and that you will have a great time looking at all the show cars. This is a rain or shine event for the whole family. There will be food trucks as well.

After the car show I suggest having a drink or bite to eat at Danny’s Pizza and Burger Bar just down the street at 6021 S. Archer. Sit down, relax, have a drink and enjoy a really good pizza. They are open until 10 p.m. Call Danny’s at 773-582-3456.

A big thank you to Danny’s for donating a portion of their May 21 sales to a good cause — “Light the Line,” which is devoted to police wellness.

Archer Avenue is a very busy street! On Friday, June 13, the Midway Chamber of Commerce will present “Summer Nite Pop” at 6422 W. Archer. There will be shopping, food, and fun from 6 to 10 p.m. This summer evening event will take place at the Biz Hub lot and sidewalk.

The Archer Heights Branch Library at 5055 S. Archer Ave. will host the next meeting of the Crime Book Club on Wednesday, June 10, at 6:30 p.m. They will discuss the book “The Talented Mr. Ripley” by Patricia Highsmith. Call 312-747-9211 for more information.

St. Mary Star of the Sea will host their Annual Skate Day on Saturday, June 6, from 1 to 4 p.m. at their parking lot at 6435 S. Kilbourn. All skaters with non-motorized wheels are welcome. There will be skateboard lessons from 1:30 to 3 p.m. Special blessings to all skaters.

Congratulations to our own Hubbard High School in the heart of West Lawn. Their JROTC (Junior Reserve Officers Training Corps) team is the only Chicago Public High School to qualify and compete in the U.S. Army JROTC National Championship this year.

The next 8th District CAPS meeting for Beat 12 will take place at The Clearing Branch Library at 6423 W. 63rd Place. The meeting starts at 6:30 p.m.

Prayers for Betty at Betty’s Ice Cream

I think summer weather is finally here to stay. One of my favorite things to do in the summer is to go to longtime neighborhood favorite — Betty’s Ice Cream at 59th and Kedzie. Not only do they have a variety of ice cream confections, I can walk there from my house.

Unfortunately, Betty’s will be closed possibly until July or later because the owner Betty has cancer and her medical care is still in the planning stage. If you are a praying kind of person, please say a few prayers for Betty. Her daughter said that she hopes her mom will be making her delicious upside down banana splits soon.

The last time I enjoyed some ice cream at Betty’s was when I went there with my old pal Elaine. She knew I was going through a challenging time in my life. She called me up and said, “Get your shoes on. We’re going to Betty’s.”

You can’t be sad when you are eating ice cream, especially when you are with a friend who cares. Elaine always has a hilarious story to share. We laughed as we enjoyed our treats. Turned out to be the best ice cream cone I ever had.
