Retail theft suspect arrested with stolen merchandise
Christopher J. Mendez, 32, of the 5400 block of South Sawyer Avenue, was charged with retail theft following his arrest at 8:43 p.m. May 3 in the 3200 block of West 55th Street. Police responded to a report of theft in progress and found Mendez on the street with $138 in stolen merchandise. He was also charged in connection with a separate theft incident.

Woman charged with trespassing in vacant house
Natasia L. Zuniga, 36, of no known address, was charged with criminal trespassing to a residence at 4:45 p.m. April 30 in the 3000 block of West Marquette Road. Police found her living illegally in a three-unit building after the new owner reported evidence of forcible entry.

CTA bus driver threatened with gun
Diquan K. Weeks, 32, of the 1100 block of West 68th Street, was charged with felony aggravated assault of a CTA employee at 11:13 p.m. April 29 in the 6500 block of South Kedzie Avenue. Police said he displayed a handgun on a bus and threatened to shoot the male driver. He was also charged with misdemeanor aggravated assault.

Man arrested on child sexual abuse charge
Oscar Rene Valencia Velenzuela, 37, of the 6200 block of South Maplewood Avenue, was charged with predatory sexual assault of a child under 13 following his arrest at 6:40 p.m. April 27 at his home. Police took him into custody after a family member reported suspicious activity on April 24. According to police, a five-year-old girl told authorities Valenzuela touched her inappropriately after the two left a bedroom.

Road-rage incident ends in assault charge
Jonathan D. Vasquez, 28, of the 5200 block of South Damen Avenue, was charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon following a road-rage incident at 3:10 p.m. April 30 in the 4500 block of South Archer Avenue. A 46-year-old man told police Vasquez waved a gun at him when he attempted to merge in traffic.

Officer threatened during traffic stop
Kaiden S. Waytsck, 22, of the 6200 block of West 64th Place, was charged with assault following a traffic stop at 6 p.m. May 3 in the 6400 block of West Archer Avenue. Police said he became irate and threatened to beat officers. He was also charged with driving a vehicle with suspended registration, no insurance, expired license plates, and no city sticker. He was cited for a cracked windshield.

Crosswalk violation leads to weapons charge
Robert Jeffrey Custard, 27, of the 6900 block of South Bell Avenue, was charged with aggravated unlawful possession of a weapon following a traffic stop at 5:30 p.m. May 3 in the 6300 block of South Mobile Avenue. Police said he was stopped for blocking a crosswalk. Officers arrested him on the weapons charge after finding a handgun under the backseat without a case and determining he did not have a concealed carry license.

Alley altercation results in weapons arrest
Rigoberto Gonzalez, 57, was charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon at 1:54 p.m. May 2 in the alley behind his residence in the 6700 block of South Tripp Avenue. Police said he pulled a gun and threatened a 49-year-old man who asked why he was blocking the alley with his trailer. He was also charged with unlawful use of a weapon.
