The Oak Lawn Police Department issued 122 citations for distracted driving in April, part of a month-long enforcement push that also resulted in 14 criminal arrests, 15 citations for speeding and 93 citations for other traffic violations during April’s Distracted Driving Awareness Month enforcement campaign.

“Distracted driving remains a serious problem in Oak Lawn and one moment of inattention can change lives forever,” said Lt. Nick Kumke. “High-visibility enforcement is one way we remind drivers that safe driving requires their full attention. April may be over, but our message is not. The Oak Lawn Police Department will continue enforcing distracted driving laws and urging motorists to put the phone away whenever they get behind the wheel.”

Other citations included:

  • 17 seatbelt violations
  • 3 child safety seat violations
  • 9 traffic arrests (suspended or revoked license, no driver’s license)
  • 14 criminal arrests (for aggravated speeding, obstructing a peace officer, possession of cannabis).

April’s Distracted Driving Awareness Month is a national initiative to reduce crashes caused by phone use and other distractions. The Oak Lawn Police Department increased patrols and enforcement during the month to raise awareness of the dangers.

Oak Lawn police joined forces with the Illinois State Police, local law enforcement and highway safety partners for this enforcement effort.

The Illinois distracted driving campaign was funded with federal traffic safety funds administered by the Illinois Department of Transportation.
