IDOT began replacing a deteriorating bridge on Archer Road over the Indiana Harbor Belt railroad tracks this week, squeezing traffic into one lane in each direction and triggering congestion through the busy Summit corridor.

The Illinois Department of Transportation project will replace the bridge deck and overlay the surface between 59th and 60th Streets. The work is expected to last through June.

The bridge’s sidewalk has shifted significantly over decades, creating safety hazards for pedestrians. Village Administrator Jerry Hurckes said IDOT will repair the concrete surface to reduce tripping hazards but cannot widen it to meet accessibility standards.

“The cement on the sidewalk area of the bridge has moved a lot and it’s not safe to walk on,” Hurckes said. “IDOT told us they can’t widen it, so it won’t be made ADA-compliant. It’s an old, old bridge with no room to expand.”

Summit Police warned residents to expect congestion, especially during rush hours, and urged drivers to avoid blocking intersections or the police department entrance. Construction crews may impose additional lane reductions as work progresses.

“Anticipate backups especially during rush hour traffic and adjust your travels accordingly,” the department said in a statement. “Please be aware not to block the intersection at 59th Street or the entrance and exit of the police department as to not impede emergency vehicle movement.”

Police said they will monitor for traffic violations that impede emergency response.
