Police officers across the Chicago suburbs will spend Friday morning, May 15, on rooftops collecting donations for Special Olympics Illinois — part of a 23-year tradition that has raised millions for athletes with intellectual disabilities.

The annual Cop On a Rooftop event runs from 5 a.m. to noon at 13 Dunkin’ locations across the region. Officers from Bedford Park, Bridgeview, Brookfield, Countryside, Hickory Hills, Hodgkins, Justice, McCook, Oak Lawn, Stickney, Forest View, and Willow Springs will man collection buckets outside participating stores.

The Law Enforcement Torch Run, which organizes the rooftop collections, has become one of Special Olympics Illinois’ largest fundraising initiatives. Last year’s event raised more than $60,000 across Illinois. Cumulatively, the event has raised more than $10 million since its inception.

The program funds year-round training, competition, and support services for athletes with intellectual disabilities across the state.
