The Brookfield Junior Bulldogs fifth-grade basketball team won the state gold division championship this year, defeating their opponent 38-36 in triple overtime in Normal.
The victory capped a dominant season for the program, which won the silver division last year. Coach Jason Gant attributes the team’s success to a philosophy he calls ESD — Every Single Day.
“Our mindset is to do what you love, get better, ESD, every single day of our lives,” Gant told the village board at its April 27 meeting, where the team was honored with certificates. “When you do what you love consistently, you can win championships and win at the highest level.”
The ESD approach emphasizes consistency over raw talent. Players who put in the most work earn playing time, Gant said.
“We don’t take a certain number of shots every day. Whoever puts in the most work will win in the end, so there’s no limit,” he said.
Mayor Michael Garvey praised the players and coaches for their dedication.
“It’s a long season. There’s a lot of work, a lot of practice, a lot of stuff outside of school, and I know you have to keep your grades up,” Garvey said. “We’re just very proud of you.”
Gant said the team plans to return to the championship next year.
“It’s been great coaching these boys, and we plan on being back,” he said.
