Early risers across the southwest suburbs may want to look up from their morning coffee on Friday, May 15. From 5 a.m. to noon, police officers will once again climb onto rooftops as part of one of the region’s most recognizable and quietly meaningful fundraisers, Cop on a Rooftop.
It is a sight that can catch drivers off guard at first. Squad cars fill the lot, lights flash, and an officer waves from above a Dunkin’ shop. Many residents now recognize it immediately as a sure sign that the annual event has returned.
Cop on a Rooftop is part of the Law Enforcement Torch Run, a statewide effort that raises money for Special Olympics Illinois. The funds support year round athletic training, competitions and health programs serving individuals with intellectual disabilities. What began as a creative way to draw attention has grown into a major fundraiser that brings communities and police departments together in a relaxed and welcoming setting.
The idea is simple. Stop at a participating Dunkin’, make a donation and connect with local officers and volunteers. Many donors receive a coupon for a free donut or coffee as a thank you. The experience blends generosity with a sense of fun, creating an atmosphere that feels more like a neighborhood gathering than a fundraiser.
Across the Southland, several local communities will host rooftop locations. Here are participating Dunkin’ sites in and around the southwest suburbs:

These locations represent just a portion of the statewide effort, but they highlight how deeply rooted the event has become in local communities.
Beyond the novelty, the impact is significant. The fundraiser has generated millions of dollars over the years, helping ensure athletes have access to sports, leadership opportunities and inclusive experiences that extend far beyond the playing field.
Officers also value the opportunity to connect with residents in a different way. Conversations replace calls for service, and a quick stop for coffee can turn into a meaningful exchange.
Keep an eye on the rooftops Friday morning. Someone will likely be waving back and inviting the community to take part in something bigger than the daily routine.
