Even after a difficult start to the year, Beverly Phono Mart is pressing forward with one of its biggest annual celebrations.
The independent record store will mark Record Store Day on Saturday, April 18, from a temporary location after a New Year’s Day crash severely damaged its longtime storefront on West 103rd Street. The shop has since relocated to a pop-up at 1802 W. 103rd St. while repairs continue.
According to Chicago police, a driver lost control of a vehicle, jumped the curb and struck the building near 103rd and Wood streets. The storefront sustained major damage, forcing a temporary closure. No injuries were reported.
Beverly Phono Mart is owned by husband-and-wife team Mallory McClaire and Chantala Kommanivanh, Beverly residents who opened the shop in August 2021. What began during the pandemic as a response to shuttered record stores has grown into a neighborhood destination and creative hub known for its welcoming, living-room atmosphere and loyal customer base.
“This is our favorite day of the year,” said store representative Mallory. “We are remaining flexible. We are grateful to have a temporary location to be able to participate in Record Store Day.”
Now in its fourth year participating in the internationally recognized event, Beverly Phono Mart is embracing the occasion with a full slate of activity and special promotions. Customers can expect 15 percent off all used records and 20 percent off all brand merchandise throughout the day.
The store will open its doors at 9 a.m. and remain open until 7 p.m., though longtime patrons know arriving early is key.
“The earlier you get here the better,” Mallory said.
Record Store Day draws collectors and music fans eager to get their hands on exclusive and limited-edition vinyl releases. This year features more than 100 special titles, many of which are only available in independent record stores.
At Beverly Phono Mart’s temporary location, the day is expected to carry the same lively spirit customers have come to expect. DJs will spin records throughout the day, creating a festive, party-like atmosphere both inside and outside the shop. Lines often begin forming well before opening, a testament to the event’s popularity and the store’s loyal following.
Even in a smaller, temporary space, the goal remains the same: to celebrate music, community and the enduring appeal of vinyl records.
As repairs continue on the original storefront, the pop-up location ensures Beverly Phono Mart won’t miss a beat on its biggest day of the year.
