Michael Gabriele still remembers when he first joined the Palos Fire Protection District more than 20 years ago. These days, he’s leading it.

Gabriele, an Orland Park resident, was promoted to fire chief on Jan. 16, 2026, stepping into the department’s top role after years of working his way up through nearly every rank.

Even with the changes, the department’s focus hasn’t shifted.

“We have great leaders and firefighters here,” he said. “Every day they train hard and work to better themselves so that they are always prepared for the next emergency.”

A promotional ceremony recognizing the department’s new leadership is scheduled for 6 p.m. April 21 at Palos Park Village Hall. Community members are invited to attend and meet the firefighters serving their
