Chicago ended 2025 with 416 homicides — the lowest number since 1965 — marking a sharp drop in violence across the city, according to police data released Monday.

The department reported 171 fewer homicides compared to 2024’s 587 murders. Shooting incidents fell 35% and shooting victims declined 34% year over year. Officials attributed the decline to strategic deployments based on data analysis, specialized task forces and modernized policing technology, according to a news release.

Detectives cleared 296 homicides in 2025 for a 71% clearance rate, the department said. The Bureau of Detectives also expanded victim services, with the Office of Victim Services now providing support to non-fatal shooting victims citywide.

Twenty-eight Chicago Police officers were shot or shot at in the line of duty in 2025. One officer, Krystal Rivera, was killed on June 5, 2025.

Chicago Police recovered 11,408 firearms in 2025 — an average of 31 guns per day in December alone, the department said.

Violent crime dropped 23% compared to 2024, while property crime declined 10%. Robberies fell 45% in December and 36% for the year. Motor vehicle thefts dropped 21% year to date, and burglaries fell 20% compared to 2024, according to police statistics.
