When you’re cruising through Palos Heights this holiday season checking out their famous “Lights in the Heights” display, keep your eyes peeled for the newest — and priciest — addition to the show.

The city just dropped over $10,000 on a gorgeous 6.5-foot illuminated angel, and let’s just say it caused quite the heavenly debate at City Council. One alderman called the price “astronomical,” while supporters argued this isn’t your average yard decoration — it’s commercial-grade with a two-year warranty.

The angel almost didn’t make it to the display after months of back-and-forth about funding. Linda Scappa from the Public Arts Committee had to plead her case, telling council members “the well is dry” when they suggested fundraising at the last minute. She even challenged aldermen to help find residents with “deep pockets” to chip in.

In the end, the angel got her wings with a 7-1 vote, though one council member held firm that the price was too steep.

So as you’re enjoying the twinkling lights and holiday magic in Palos Heights this year, see if you can spot the controversial celestial celebrity.

At $10,000, she might be the most photogenic angel in the suburbs.

Locals Only tip: She’s refurbished but restored to heavenly perfection, so she should stand out among the other decorations.
