The smell of sizzling all-beef hot dogs and the sound of live music filled the air Wednesday evening as the Village of Palos Park celebrated its annual Hot Dog Day & Concert at the Palos Park Recreation Center, 8901 W. 123rd St.

The event, timed to coincide with National Hot Dog Day, drew residents of all ages for an evening of food, games, and summer fun – and the rain earlier in the day did not stop anyone from coming out and enjoying the festivities.

Guests lined up for grilled hot dogs—550 of them, to be exact—cooked and served on site by Village of Palos Park staff. The hot dogs, served with all the traditional fixings, were available for purchase along with chips and soft drinks. Alcoholic beverages were also available for sale from Durbin’s of Palos Hills.

Stephen DeFalco, Director of Recreation and Parks for the Village of Palos Park, said the event has become a local tradition.

“Over the past few years, it’s become a favorite. The past two years, we’ve sold around 500 hot dogs each time,” DeFalco said.

Always coinciding with National Hot Dog Day, the event was originally introduced in 2011 as an additional summer event.  A concert was later incorporated, making it even more festive.

DeFalco explained that funds from the food and drink sales go directly back into the community.

“All proceeds help support the Recreation and Parks Department,” he said. “That means we’re able to continue offering free programs and events throughout the year for residents.”

Beyond the food, this year’s celebration had the entire community jiving.

Lawn games, including cornhole and giant Jenga, kept kids and adults alike entertained. Many brought blankets and chairs to relax and enjoy live music from Return2Soul, a local band known for its soulful covers and high-energy performances.

“With the food, music, and lawn games, Hot Dog Day gives off more of a block party feel than a village event,” DeFalco said. “It’s relaxed, fun, and a great way to bring the community together.”

Families lingered on the grass into the evening, dancing to the music and savoring the warm summer night. For many, it was the perfect midweek escape.

“This is what summer should feel like,” said local resident Roger Schweikert, enjoying the concert with his kids. “Hot dogs, good music, and being with your neighbors. It doesn’t get better than that.”
