Overcast skies and periods of on-and-off rain did little to dampen the excitement as families gathered at Bennett Park on June 8 for the Green Hills Public Library District’s annual Summer Reading Kickoff Party.
Children splashed through puddles, parents carried umbrellas and community members of all ages braved the wet weather to celebrate the start of the library’s summer reading season. The event, held from 3 to 7 p.m., transformed the park into a lively hub of games, music and family-friendly activities despite the less-than-ideal forecast.

Library staff members welcomed visitors throughout the afternoon, helping attendees register for the Summer Reading and Activity Challenge while encouraging residents to embrace this year’s theme, “Plant a Seed, Read.”
“The Summer Reading Program is one of my favorite traditions,” Library Director Jane Jenkins said. “Our program not only makes reading fun, it also gives members of our community free opportunities to learn, explore and connect all summer long.”
One of the most popular attractions was the return of Rainbow Cone, which handed out free frozen treats to participants who signed up for the summer challenge while supplies lasted. Families lined up for the sweet reward as children eagerly shared their reading goals for the weeks ahead.
The annual kickoff marked the beginning of a summer-long program designed to encourage reading and learning among children, teens and adults. Participants can take part in age-appropriate reading challenges, attend library-sponsored events and activities, and earn prizes throughout the summer.
The program has continued to grow in recent years as parents and educators recognize the importance of maintaining literacy skills during the summer months. Library officials expected hundreds of local families to participate before the program concludes on Aug. 2.
Although intermittent rain showers passed through the area during the afternoon, the weather did not stop the community from coming together.
“We had a surprisingly good turnout given the weather,” said Catherine Kruse, head of marketing and communications for the library.
Families lingered throughout the afternoon, enjoying activities, connecting with neighbors and celebrating a tradition that has become a summertime staple in Palos Hills.
Registration for the Summer Reading and Activity Challenge opened June 8 and remains free to the public. Residents can continue to register online or in person at the Green Hills Public Library.
