Carl Sandburg High School sophomore Elise Anderson has turned a class assignment into statewide recognition, earning the title of Illinois State Winner in the national InvestWrite competition.
InvestWrite, an essay contest offered to participants of The Stock Market Game, challenges students to demonstrate their understanding of investing and financial literacy. Anderson, a 16-year-old Orland Park resident, stood out for her thoughtful analysis and sharp writing, earning her top honors in Illinois.
“It is an absolute honor to be recognized,” Anderson said. “I put a lot of hard work into this project and am proud of what I was able to accomplish.”
Students in Christina Simpson’s AP Macroeconomics class were invited to enter the contest in the fall. The prompt asked students to describe their Stock Market Game portfolios, explain whether their investments were diversified, and reflect on how to build toward long-term financial success.
“This opportunity was presented to my AP Macroeconomics class by my teacher Ms. Simpson,” Anderson said. “This project demonstrated the value of making better decisions through analysis. While this specific project involved the stock market, I have gained a better understanding of using critical thinking and analysis to make better choices.”
Anderson’s essay was selected by Simpson to be submitted for judging.
InvestWrite evaluators then scored the essays based on subject knowledge, reasoning, and writing style. As the state winner, Anderson received a trophy, a banner for her school, InvestWrite merchandise, and a $100 gift card.
The award presentation was held in her AP U.S. Government class.
Beyond academics, Anderson is involved in several school organizations including First Class Ambassadors, where she serves as a student leader and spokesperson for Sandburg. She is also active in Orchesis, CORE (Cancer Outreach, Resources and Education), Student Council, and the Culinary Club.
“My ultimate career goal is to study psychology in college, where I plan to work toward a career as a therapist or counselor,” she said. “Through this project and research, I plan to put these tools and knowledge to use for investing in my future college finances.”
Anderson encourages other students to take advantage of opportunities like InvestWrite, especially when supported by a dedicated teacher.
“I greatly appreciate the opportunity to be part of this contest and encourage future students to do the same,” she said. “I would also like to thank Ms. Simpson for her support and encouragement throughout this entire school year.”
