Area girls softball teams entered sectional play with their offenses clicking.

Marist outscored two foes by a combined score of 26-0 to win the Class 4A Benet Regional.

Riverside-Brookfield took care of business, outscoring opponents 20-4 at the Class 4A Hinsdale Central Regional.

In Class 3A, Evergreen Park won its own regional, beating two opponents by a combined score of 30-0.  

Nazareth blanked host Hinsdale South 10-0 on May 30, while St. Laurence beat Kennedy 15-0 for a title in its own regional. Both played just one regional game due to forfeits.

There were plenty of local heroes in the championship games played on May 30.

Marist (33-2) beat Benet 10-0 in six innings as Breanna Hanik had two home runs and Lexi Kyros belted a three-run homer to end the game.

R-B (22-9) beat Lyons 11-0 as Ella Jurgens had three hits and freshman Amelia Pytel pitched the shutout.

For Nazareth (14-15), Emme Barnes had three hits, including a home run, and three RBIs while Anabella Rychetsky struck out 13 against  Hinsdale South.

St. Laurence (21-7) featured Viviana Chavez and Aoibhe Landers, who each had two RBIs in the 15-0 triumph over Kennedy.

Grace Fontaine had five RBIs for Evergreen Park (18-14) in a 15-0 win over Payton.

Roadrunners hot in soccer

Nazareth’s girls soccer team lost five straight games to close out its regular season.

That meant nothing in the postseason.

The Roadrunners claimed five playoff wins including a 4-1 victory over St. Francis May 31 in the Class 2A Glenbard South Sectional 

The Roadrunners (15-10-1) dominated in the first half, scoring three goals.

Lily Martinez, Liliana Cerruti, Olivia O’Neill and Samantha Austin scored goals for the Roadrunners while Sarah Owen, Martinez and O’Neill added assists.

Goalie Ana Djurasovic came up with seven saves.

Marist defending volleyball title

Regional host Marist (34-2) knocked out St. Rita 25-13, 25-12 in the final and beat Young 25-7, 25-9 on May 31 in the semifinals of the De La Salle Sectional.

Mount Carmel won the Mansueto Regional with a 25-22, 25-18 win over Kenwood. 

Lyons takes regional in lacrosse

Lyons’ boys lacrosse team beat St. Ignatius 4-3 to win the St. Rita Sectional on May 30 and improve to 17-3.

Sweigard leads area netters

Lyons’ Shay Sweigard, who teamed with Luke Howell in 2024 to finish in the top eight, tried his hand as a singles player this year.

The junior was the area’s most successful player in the IHSA state boys tennis tournament, reaching the fifth round of consolation.

Sweigard won three matches over the weekend including his first two, before finishing out 1-2.

In Class 1A, the Brother Rice doubles team of Aidan Alving-Dominic Leodoro went 2-2. 

Stagg hires coaches

Stagg hired former De La Salle coach Christopher Hall to be its baseball coach and Danielle Doidge as its cheerleading coach.

Hall, a former scout for the Atlanta Braves, also coached at St. Patrick and Clemente.

Doidge served as an assistant at Stagg for five years and is an assistant powerlifting coach at the Palos Hills school.
