Marist, Mount Carmel, Brother Rice and Riverside-Brookfield won team regional titles as the IHSA wrestling state series got underway on Feb. 8.
Class 3A Downers Grove South
Class 3A top-ranked Marist beat Lyons 320-212 for the title. Taking firsts for the RedHawks were Elio Gil (106), Joe Bronske (113), Michael Esteban (126), George Marinopoulos (132), Jonathan Fields (138), Donavon Allen (144), Tommy Fidler (150), Ethan Sonne (157), Will Denny (165), Ricky Ericksen (190) and Tommy O’Brien (215). Lyons’ Louie King won at 120.
Class 3A Morton
Class 3A No. 2 Mount Carmel outdistanced Morton 304.5-148.5 for the title. The Caravan had 13 individual champs: Sebastian Garcia (106), William Grafton-Hodgetts (113), Kavel Moore (120), Justin Williamson (132), Seth Mendoza (138), Jaxon Jorgensen (144), Jairo Acuna (150), Liam Kelly (157), Daniel Lynch (165), Kevin Kalchbrenner (175), Kenneth Segerson (190), Leonard Siegal (215) and Landon Carter (285).
Class 2A St. Rita
Class 2A No. 8 Brother Rice won the team title, 253.5-197 over No. 25 Evergreen Park. The Crusaders had eight champions: Danny Tait (113), Bobby Conway (132), Oliver Davis (138), Jonathan Harris (144), Jack O’Connor (150), Frank Miceli (157), Dan Costello (175), James Crane (190). Evergreen’s champs were Brayden Mateja-Bates (106), Adrian Cervantes (126) and Genesis Ward (215). Also winning titles were St. Rita’s Jack Hogan (120), Micah Spinazzola (165) and Pat Connelly (285).
Class 2A Riverside-Brookfield
Host R-B beat runner-up St. Laurence 227.5-205 for the team title. The Bulldogs had five winners: Miles Russell-Barnes (113), Jacob Godoy (132), Tony Lombardo (138), Ricky Gutierrez-Blanco (144), Ethan Rivas (157) and Matthew Elzy (190), St. Laurence’s champs were Liam Kissane (106), Jack Claussen (165), Matthew Zalinski (175) and Xavier Bitner (215). Other local champs were Kennedy’s Victor Alvarado (120) and Habibullo Begov (150).
Class 2A Richards
Richards; Mike Taheny won the 190-pound title.
Class 1A Walther Christian
Nazareth had three regional champs: Emilio Fortiz (113), James Furlong (138) and Sam Swais (215).
Class 1A Hope Academy
De La Salle’s Jeremiah Lawrence (120), Vincent Arvetis (126), Marquis Mays (175) and David McCarthy (285) won regional titles, as did Horizon-Southwest’s Sami Marrero (190).
