Acorn to Oak studios highlight young artistic talent in Oak Lawn

The organizers of Acorn to Oak Studios in Oak Lawn aim to celebrate all things art.

The studio was founded in November 2022, with an initial information event held in the north wing of Pilgrim Faith Church, 9411 S. 51st Ave. The first official session took place on Feb. 5, 2023. Andrea Zumhagen, a co-founder and mother whose six children have participated in many Oak Lawn programs, encourages youth and teens to get involved in the arts.

Joining her as co-founders are former Oak Lawn Mayor Sandra Bury and Linda Vorderer, who serves on the village’s Arts Commission and is the wife of current Mayor Terry Vorderer. Zumhagen now serves as president, Bury as vice president, and Linda Vorderer as director.

Although Acorn to Oak Studios started two years ago, organizers felt it was time to host an official ribbon-cutting, combined with an open house and art sale on Friday. The event featured more than 200 pieces of art, including paintings and sketches from high school students and other local artists.

Bury, who was Oak Lawn’s mayor for two terms starting in 2013, shared her excitement about the new studio. “It’s unique, and we have so many classes for everyone,” Bury said. “We want to bring art to the community. There is still a big need for art here. We are reaching out to art teachers, promoting art, and making it accessible and affordable. We are really excited to see all the enthusiasm.”

Mayor Terry Vorderer agreed, emphasizing the importance of securing space at Pilgrim Faith Church. The sessions started on the first floor, but additional studio space was later created upstairs in the former preschool classrooms.

Nicole Wetzell, a marketing professional and vice president of the Oak Lawn Chamber of Commerce, highlighted the economic benefits of the arts. “In the Loop, the arts generate $2 billion—and that’s not even including Taylor Swift,” she said. “The arts also mean jobs and money for the community.”

Linda Vorderer, who has taught art at all levels, believes the studio will grow with community support. “This enterprise will flourish if we all back it,” she said.

The open house also highlighted young talent like Carmen Casillas, an 18-year-old Reavis High School senior. Casillas displayed artwork, including a children’s book illustration she created. “It took a long time, but it’s my favorite thing I’ve done,” said Casillas, who lives in Burbank. She is considering the Art Institute but is open to other options.

Fabrizio Coss, a senior at St. Xavier University studying graphic design, also showed his work, including a painting of Jackie Robinson he made for African American History Month. “I liked doing it,” said Coss, who lives in Chicago’s West Elsdon neighborhood. “I hadn’t heard of this place before, but I’d be interested in doing more here.”

Keeley Peterson, a senior at Richards High School and volunteer, enjoys the studio’s environment. “They’ve helped me with quick sketches and developing more detail,” she said. “I enjoy myself when I’m here.”

Linda Vorderer said Acorn to Oak Studios welcomes artists of all levels. “There was a need for this in Oak Lawn,” Bury added. “The arts were really lacking. We want everyone to come here and create. This has been a lifelong dream for all of us.”

The studio’s other officers include administrator Laura Cunningham, secretary Julie Miller, and treasurer Joe Skibinski. Art sessions are led by accomplished artist Clayton J. Beck III, an Oak Lawn native. Classes are open to Oak Lawn residents and those from neighboring communities.
