Richards routs Reavis, clinches South Suburban Red title

Whether the conference was called the SICA North, the SICA Orange or the South Suburban Red, the most dominant team has usually been Richards.

The Bulldogs reaffirmed that on Oct. 25, cruising past Reavis 76-0 in Oak Lawn.

Richards (8-1, 6-0) won the 35th conference championship in program history. According to coach Tony Sheehan, the Bulldogs haven’t lost to a league foe since 2015.

“Winning the conference means a lot to us,” Sheehan said. “The kids know how important it is. They want to uphold the legacy and the tradition of Richards football.

“We have a lot of coaches on our staff who played at Richards and lived it, and I think that means a little more to the kids.”

The Bulldogs wasted little time asserting their will against the Rams (4-5, 2-4). North Dakota State recruit Myles Mitchell scored on a 49-yard run just 16 seconds into the game. Mitchell finished with five carries for 73 yards and three touchdowns. He also caught two passes for 44 yards and a score.

Four minutes later, quarterback Noah Escobedo (11 of 15, 199 yards) connected with Milan Mosley (two receptions, 55 yards) on a 42-yard touchdown. That was followed by Mitchell’s 7-yard touchdown run later in the period. Kamani Sapata then found the end zone on a 13-yard sprint, making it 28-0 Bulldogs after one quarter.

The second quarter began with a pair of touchdown tosses from Escobedo to Mitchell (26 yards) and Trenton Curry (3 yards). A Johnny Liscomb interception led to another 7-yard TD run from Mitchell, which tied Mitchell for the single-season rushing touchdown record at Richards with 30. Mitchell shares the mark with Billy Andrews, who set the record in 1996.

“Scoring 30 touchdowns in a season is pretty impressive, considering the program we’ve had,” Sheehan said. “We hope we have a few more weeks with Myles. He’s a worker and he’s become more vocal. He’s just a fun kid and a great kid to be around.

“He’s a great kid and the other kids look up to him. He makes plays and he has great vision. I’m happy he’s on our side.”

The last touchdown of the first half was scored by Eric Jacobs, who ran 14 yards to make it 55-0 Richards.

In the second half, the Bulldogs had touchdowns from Jordan Lewis (40-yard run), Ladarrius Foster (35-yard run) and Jacobs (55-yard run).

Foster finished with 11 carries for 108 yards and Jacobs with two attempts for 69 yards. Richards rushed 23 times for 313 yards while piling up 512 yards of total offense.
