Sandburg quarterback Anthony Shelton threw three touchdown passes, Quinn Durkin scored three times and the Eagles got two TDs from their defense as they rolled to a 63-34 win over Homewood-Flossmoor in a Week 3 Southwest Valley crossover.
Shelton, a senior third-year starter, finished 14-of-19 for 283 yards and the three TDs to help Sandburg (2-1) to its second straight win Sept. 13 in Orland Park. Shelton had 180 yards after one quarter and 250 yards at halftime, and the Eagles went heavy on the running game to run clock in the second half.
The defense contributed to the scoring as Ryan Dokey scored on a 21-yard fumble recovery and Vincent Smith returned an interception 57 yards for a touchdown. Sandburg also recovered a blocked punt deep in Vikings territory, leading to a touchdown.
Senior wide receiver Charlie Snoreck had seven receptions for 116 yards and a touchdown and Durkin had three receptions for 101 yards and a score. Lucas Dyra caught a 10-yard TD pass.
Durkin, a sophomore running back, also ran for two touchdowns, and junior running back Luke Basiorka had 21 carries for 100 yards and two scores.
“Quinn is a dynamic athlete,” Eagles head coach Troy McAllister said of Durkin, who played a portion of his freshman season on varsity. “He has a really high football IQ and we use him in many different ways. We put a lot on him playing both ways and he’s able to process it and handle the workload and the mental side that comes with it as well.”
Sandburg as it jumped out to a 49-20 halftime advantage over the Vikings (2-1). Coming into the game, H-F had outscored its opponents by a combined 91-6.
“This game was a tale of two halves,” McAllister said, referring to the Eagles passing onslaught in the first two quarters and the running of Durkin and Basiorka in the second half. “We knew we had to run the ball well and (H-F) knew we had to run the ball. We ran the ball really, really well in the second half.”
