The Kankakee Public Library, 201 E. Merchant Street, recently announced programs for July. More information is available by calling 815-939-4564.
Kankakee Public Library July 4th Closing: The library will be closed on Thursday, July 4, in observance of Independence Day and will resume normal business hours on Friday, July 5, at 9 a.m. For ways to access library resources, such as e-books and Kanopy streaming services, visit lions-online.org!
Tuesday Morning Book Discussion: The library hosts the Tuesday Morning Book Discussion on the second Tuesday of each month at 10 a.m. In July, the group will meet on Tuesday, July 9, to discuss “Eleanor Oliphant Is Completely Fine,” by Gail Honeyman.
This is a heartwarming and poignant novel that follows the life of Eleanor, a socially awkward and lonely woman. It’s a story of resilience, friendship, and the power of human connection. This program is free and open to the public. Hope you’ll join us!
Lawyers in the Library: In partnership with the library, Prairie State Legal Services invites the community to meet with a lawyer for free on the second Thursday of every month, from 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., in the third floor suite. This month, the event will be held on Thursday, July 11.
Representatives from Prairie State will offer free, one-on-one meetings with an attorney to give legal advice. All participants must complete a screening process before speaking with an attorney about civil legal matters. More information may be found at the library’s website, www.lions-online.org, or by calling the library.
Bingo, Books, and BP: Join us on Friday, July 12, from 10 a.m. – noon, for the free Bingo, Books, and BP in the third floor meeting room of the library. Every month, there are chances to win a variety of prizes, including books, with light refreshments provided. Concurrent with Bingo, an R.N. from St. Mary’s is available to provide simple health checks, such as blood pressure readings, as well as to answer basic medical questions and provide referrals for various community resources.
Soul Collections Book Discussion: You are invited to join the free monthly book group, Soul Collections, a program that highlights Black authors and themes. The next meeting will be held on Thursday, July 25, at 5:30 p.m., and we’ll be discussing “The Sweetness of Water,” by Nathan Harris. Set at the end of the Civil War, the focus of this novel is on the aftermath of slavery, as told through the lives of two formerly enslaved men and the white couple who employs them on their farm.
Library closing early for Merchant Street MusicFest: The library will close at noon on Saturday, July 27, for Merchant Street MusicFest and will resume regular business hours on Monday, July 29, at 9 a.m.
