Price of Hotel Room in Kankakee About to Go Up

While final action won’t take place until the June 17 Kankakee City Council meeting, officials have rolled out the details of a hotel tax the city will levy beginning July 1. The action is required, in part, to meet terms of Kankakee’s agreement with the Kankakee County Convention and Visitor’s Bureau to give at least a portion of a room tax to the Bureau as a funding mechanism for its tourism promotion efforts. Here is the text of the hotel tax ordinance:

“There is hereby levied and imposed upon the privilege of occupying and using, for rent, any room in any hotel located within the corporate boundaries of Kankakee a tax at a rate of 8.25% of the gross rent charged for each such hotel room for each 24 hour period, or any portion thereof, which tax shall begin to accrue on July 1, 2024.

“It shall be the duty of the hotel operator to collect said tax and remit it to the city comptroller.”
