OLCHS Student Council Thanksgiving Food Drive aids needy
By Kelly White
Donating to those in need during the holiday season are students at Oak Lawn Community High School.
The Student Council at the high school, 9400 Southwest Hwy. in Oak Lawn, recently hosted its annual Thanksgiving Food Drive.
“I like the Student Council Thanksgiving Food Drive because it’s an opportunity to give back to our community and to help others, especially during a time of giving,” Patrycia Szelembleski, 17, of Bridgeview, said.
This year’s food drive was a competition between several teachers, offices and clubs at the high school.
Participants were: Mike Bielski, Business Office; Ailysh Cooper, Deans Office; and teachers, the Spartan Screamers; Pat Hennelly, Todd Jarolim, Eric Kallenborn, Jesenia Kolimas, Kyle Kuzur, Mike Olsson, Kate Stanton and Jeff Vazzana.
Each collected cans and/or money donations directly from students and staff members. If students had multiple teachers participating, students could decide where to bring their items.
Community members were also welcome to drop off non-perishable food items and grocery gift certificates.
“I love seeing students participate in the food drive and compete with other classes because it expresses the love that we all have in working together and helping our local community,” Sammah Jadrawi, 17, of Oak Lawn, said.
All food and monetary donations will go to local food pantries at Faith Lutheran Church in Oak Lawn and Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Burbank.
“Our students are vested in bettering their community and helping people in need,” Jennifer Sidlow, Student Council Adviser at Oak Lawn Community High School, said. “Our students and staff also love a good ole’ friendly competition. Spartans like to see who will create the biggest buzz to garner the greatest donations.”
Incentives include the teacher, office or school club with the most points will receive a prize for being the top class. One can of a nonperishable food item equals one point and each dollar donation equals two points.
The winner will also receive Oak Lawn Community High School’s infamous Turkey Chalice to keep in their classroom until the next friendly competition.
The Student Council’s annual Thanksgiving Food Drive has been a tradition at the high school for more than 20 years. Students are happy to promote the event and to see it continue on successfully every holiday season.
“One thing I like most about the Student Council Thanksgiving Food Drive is creating all the artwork to promote the food drive,” Angel Maya, 17, of Hometown, said. “I feel like ads, posters and school billboards are essential to promote something like a food drive because people can see everywhere and can constantly be reminded through artwork.”
