An ordinance that would have approved a conditional use permit for the operation of a liquor store at 580 W. Jeffery in Kankakee was struck down by the City Council at the Monday, November 20, meeting. Despite the voicing of support for the project by former Kankakee Aldermen Carl Brown Jr. and Steven Hunter, the current panel was having none of the idea after hearing from residents, who were opposed to the store.
City Council 4th Ward Alderman Lance Marczak chimed in with the opposition stating the majority of constituents he personally spoke with were against the store, which would be located in an overwhelmingly residential neighborhood. The vote to deny moving forward with the conditional use permit was 11-2, in favor.
In other business, the city council approved a contract with Langlois Roofing, Inc., for $109,995 to replace the roof on a building the city purchased last year, which is to be used for additional office space for the public safety department at 250 N. Indiana Avenue.
