Happy mid-September!
I was fascinated when my husband did some ancestry research and found out he had a great grandfather, Simon. The cousins and him all seemed to be in agreement that Simon was a Jewish man. So, whenever this time of year comes around, I feel we should respect and honor the Jewish holidays. Rosh Hashanah has already passed, which is the Jewish New Year celebrated with prayers, food and gatherings. The most solemn day will be Sept. 24–Yom Kippur, a day of prayer and atonement.
The Archer Heights Civic Association has resumed their meetings after the summer break. I recently received their newsletter and can share with you some “goings on” in the neighborhood.
The Mount Pindos restaurant on Archer and Pulaski has been demolished. There are plans for a new Byline Bank building at that corner.
Paisans Pizza is back in the picture at Archer and Cicero. No target date for construction is available. If I recall, it took a while for the Pulaski location in West Lawn to be constructed. There may also be a new fast-food restaurant near 49th and Cicero, on the east side, Charley’s Cheese Steak.
Previously I had mentioned how the CTA had blocked off the Keeler entrance/exit at the Orange Line station parking lot. The AHCA’s newsletter shared some insight as to why this happened. The barricade has been put up to discourage criminal activity in the parking lot. Eventually, a gate will be installed allowing CTA maintenance vehicles to enter and to allow members of the New Life Church overflow parking during Sunday services. Hopefully this barricade/gate will discourage break-ins, graffiti and our weekend car drifters.
St. Bruno & St. Richard did combine schools, held at two campuses. All grades are now consolidated into what formerly was the St. Richard School building.
Let us roll up our sleeves and get jabbed again! I have no medical experience and can’t offer advice. But I do remember when my husband had shingles, both he and I went through “hell.” The Garfield Ridge Civic League, along with 23rd Ward Ald. Silvana Tabares, is offering a free immunization event. It will be held at Hope Church Midway, 6059 S. Archer, on Oct. 2 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Several vaccines will be available for residents such as COVID-19, flu, pneumonia, tetanus and shingles.
Happy Anniversary to Robert (“Bob”) Stanek on Sept. 27. Forty-three years ago, you said, “I do” to the perfect woman!
