Florence A. Crowner, 99, departed this world January 10, 2023, with her family by her side, while enjoying her Florida home – just three weeks shy of her 100th birthday.
She was the youngest of seven children born to John and Kate (DeVries) Medendorp on February 6, 1923, in Yankton, South Dakota, where she grew up on the family farm. She married Charles L. Crowner January 21, 1948, and together they made a life in Illinois. They lived in Kankakee for more than 60 years, where she had a long career with the Illinois Department of Mental Health, caring for those in need.
Following the death of her husband, she relocated to Springfield in 2010 to be nearer to family and was a member of Springfield First United Methodist Church. There she made new friends and enjoyed her time living at Seasons of Pine Creek and her brief time at Illinois Presbyterian.
Her sharp mind was always up on the latest, as she never missed the news. She enjoyed social chats, bingo and did crossword and jumble puzzles daily. Florence enjoyed life and was blessed with many friendships – old and new. Family was always her priority, and she shared her love each and every day…and would advise everyone to do the same.
She is survived by her son, Richard L. Crowner of Millsburg, Florida; her daughter, Doris (Thomas) Garrett of Springfield; and many nieces and nephews.
Arrangements are under the direction of Schreffler Funeral Home, Kankakee. Cremation rites have been accorded, with an intimate graveside service to be held at Kankakee Memorial Gardens at a later date, along with a celebration of life. Please sign her guestbook at www.schrefflerfuneralhomes.com.
