Two East Avenue residents asked La Grange trustees for a traffic study south of 47th Street, saying construction at 47th Street and East Avenue is pushing drivers onto neighborhood streets near Seventh Avenue School and a park.

Linda Pluto said traffic now backs up on East Avenue from 47th Street to Plainfield Road from about 2 p.m. until well past 6:30 p.m.

Drivers cut through on 49th and 50th streets and on Seventh through 10th avenues, she said, including when trains stop trafficat 47th Street and East Avenue.

Pluto said East Avenue has a 40 mph speed limit, the highest in the village, and carries the most truck traffic. She said the Illinois Department of Transportation controls East Avenue.

The cut-through streets carry walkers, cyclists and scooter riders, she said, and have no sidewalks west of East Avenue until 10th Avenue.

John Pluto, her husband, asked trustees to lower the speed limit and add stop signs on 49th and 50th streets at Seventh, Eighth and 10th avenues. He said drivers routinely run the stop sign at 10th Avenue.

He also questioned how the village will pay for a traffic study north of 47th Street that a public works official described at the previous board meeting. He said he found no money for a traffic study in the budget and that he and his wife have each filed public records requests.

“Let’s keep transparency a priority,” he said.

Trustees did not respond to either request during the meeting.
