The Kankakee City Council will vote on whether to approve a halfway house for recovering alcohol and drug abusers at its next meeting on January 17.
Plans call for the halfway house to operate at 152 South Greenwood Avenue and be operated by L’som Ministries.
Kankakee Mayor Chris Curtis says he believes there is support for allowing a conditional use permit for the facility. Curtis said, at the council meeting on January 3, that “this is something we did approve in the Marycrest east side area about a year ago, but the landlord would not renew the ministry’s lease, so they had to find a new home.”
The facility would house full time eight-to-10 persons. The building on Greeenwood Avenue does not have a sprinkler system and would have to have one installed no later than 180 days after the halfway house begins operating.
