Last week, two visitors to our country from Lithuania, here for the Chicago Marathon, visited our neighborhood. Luka Lesauskait, the head of communications for the Lithuanian Red Cross, and Darius Remeika, who was running in the marathon, found the time to stop in and check out the Legacy Room of the Sisters of St. Casimir, 2601 W. Marquette Road.

If you have been wanting to visit the Legacy Room, which gives an interesting history of the Sisters of St. Casimir in our neighborhood, call (773) 349-8064 and leave a message for Daina Cyvas. She would be happy to arrange a tour for you.

For seniors, today, Friday, Oct. 21, is Morning Joe and Treats at 8:30 a.m. at the Southwest Regional Senior Center, 6117 S. Kedzie. If you are interested in some exercise today, the fitness class begins at 9 a.m.

The final event for Brother Chuck’s 3-on-3 Basketball Tournament is this Saturday, Oct. 22, from 1 to 4 p.m. Open to ages 14 to 24, this competition began Oct. 1 and now culminates with awards and refreshments in the former St. Clare of Montefalco School gymnasium. Enter at the corner of 55^th and Talman.

At the Chicago Lawn Branch Library, 6120 S. Kedzie, this Saturday, Oct. 22, Family Cinema presents the 1998 Disney movie Halloweentown and the 2001 follow-up Halloweentown II from 1:30 to 4 p.m.

On Monday, Oct. 24, the Marquette Park Art Workshops hosts a sugar skull workshop. Join visiting artist William Estrada for the 5 or 6 p.m. session in the fieldhouse.

Next Wednesday, Oct. 26, AARP Smart Driver TEK comes to the Senior Center from 10 to 11:30 a.m. This is a 90-minute free workshop offering an interactive way to stay up-to-date on the latest safety technology in your current or future car. Here you will learn about what new technologies are available and how they work. Register by calling (312) 747-0440.

Coming up on Sunday, Oct. 30 is a Halloween party for adults at Thrift, 2517 W. 59^th St. They promise a fun time with drinks, food, costume contest, DJ and decorations galore. Doors open at 7:30 p.m.

This Halloween, plan on bringing the kids to trick or treat on 63^rd Street. Stop at the Greater Southwest Development Corp., 2601 W. 63^rd St., on Halloween to get your trick-or-treat bag and a candy trail map, telling which businesses are waiting for you!

The Bogan High School Class of 1987, is planning a reunion for Saturday, Dec. 10, at 115 Bourbon Street, Merrionette Park, from 7 to 10 p.m. Tickets, $40 per person, will include drinks and appetizers for three hours, a class gift and raffle tickets. Paying options will be announced in the near future.

When we left 1978 last week, the Spartans soccer team had been doing really well on their road to the playoffs until last week’s loss to Brother Rice. By this week in 1978, the Spartans had knocked off two first place teams in their conference and were revving up for the state playoffs in November. Mitch J. was the first to identify the Spartans as the soccer team at Quigley South.

Forty-four years ago this week, John Evans Sr. passed away. I’m guessing many of you will remember him because he was so active in the community. The owner of Evans Funeral Home, 6845 S. Western, John was an officer of the Marquette Manor Chamber of Commerce, the Lithuanian Chamber of Commerce, a director of Midland Savings and Loan, a director of Holy Cross Hospital and a member of many Lithuanian organizations.

This week in 1978 the Southwest Parish and Neighborhood Federation had obtained more than 11,500 signatures on a petition that they were presenting to Mayor Michael Bilandic in hopes of getting their referendum on the coming ballot. However, at the same time, the Council of Lawn Neighbors was urging local aldermen to vote against the proposed plan. Which side won? Do you remember what this was all about?
