Southwest Side native Robert Swiderski was mobbed by well-wishers at the entrance to the Chicago Lawn (8th) District police station last week, as he delivered a penny to each officer. The gesture was meant as a kind of conver- sation starter (“A penny for your thoughts?”) with police officers regarding job stress and mental health. Swiderski said police officers in Chicago and nationwide are committing suicide at an alarming rate, and the first step to com- batting that is to get them to be more open about their struggles, reach out for help and understand that they are never alone. After leaving the station, Swiderski–an ultramarathoner–then walked to all other 21 district stations in the city over two days, with the same message.– Supplied photo
