Guinea pigs rescued from Palos Heights dumpster

Palos Heights police rescued four guinea pigs last week from a dumpster behind 7500 College Drive.
Police said someone saw the animals being thrown into the dumpster on July 28 and called authorities.
Police Officer Dave Delaney, Cadet Matthew Kroll and Community Service Officer Matthew Murray, whose father is a veterinarian, jumped in and rescued the creatures from the dumpster and called Critter Corral Guinea Pig Rescue in Highland, Ind.
Representatives from Critter Corral came to take custody of the abandoned pets.
In a posting on Facebook, Critter Corral thanked the police for taking the time to rescue the animals.
Critter Corral was founded in 1999 and its mission is to rescue homeless and unwanted guinea pigs and find them new homes.
A spokesman for the group said the guinea pigs were female and two might be pregnant. The guinea pigs will be put up for adoption in a couple of months.
The agency said guinea pigs require a lot of attention and care are often abandoned when their novelty wears off. In the wild, they tend to become victims of predators or die of exposure.
The pigs originally came from South America and live from five to eight years.
