THOMAS E. FARRELL

Thomas E. Farrell, 74, passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family on Sunday, June 12, in Palos Heights.

Tommy or “Rusty” (as he was lovingly known) is survived by his beloved wife of nearly 54 years, Mary, his two adoring sons, Tim (Amy) and Paul (Suzanne), his loving grandchildren Brendan, Nicholas and Katie and a very special dog, Riley. Fond uncle, cherished cousin, dear friend to many. He was preceded in death by his father, Robert; mother, Marie; and brother, Bobby.

Tommy was born in Chicago in 1948. He met Mary, the love of his life, at a chance outing on Rainbow Beach.

After serving his country in the Army, he married Mary in 1968. He then joined the Chicago Police Department from which he retired as a detective, after more than 30 years.

Raising a beautiful family, Tommy often worked multiple jobs. He also found time to attend night school and graduated from Loyola University.

He loved animals, and at an early age had even wanted to be a veterinarian. In addition to raising his sons, he and Mary managed to raise seven dogs.

Tommy had time for everyone and enjoyed talking, especially over a meal. He never started his day without a good breakfast!

He provided sage advice, and his counsel was often sought. An excellent communicator, he found his voice and the perfect words when his loved ones needed help navigating grief or tough decisions. He was so sentimental, and gave beautiful gifts of symbolism to his family that he knew we might not even fully understand until he was no longer with us. He was profoundly philosophical about life and death. He spoke about “driving the bus” while in our earthly form, but that the fun would really start in our heavenly form. To know him, even for just a few minutes, was to love him. We will miss him dearly.

In lieu of flowers, and to honor Tommy’s love of animals, a gift to The Humane Society would be wonderful and so appreciated at www.humanesociety.org

Funeral services were held June 16 at the Becvar & Son Funeral Home, 5539 W. 127th Street, Crestwood. Entombment Holy Sepulchre Cemetery in Alsip.
