Naz teacher earns Golden Apple nomination
From staff reports
A teacher at Nazareth Academy in La Grange Park has been named a Golden Apple Award Finalist for Excellence in Teaching.
Amelia García is one of just 30 finalists for the prestigious award. Hundreds of high school teachers across the state were nominated.
Winners will be announced this spring—surprised individually at the schools.
García currently teaches AP English Language and English 2 Honors. She is an alumna of DePaul University and holds a bachelor’s degree in Secondary Education and English, as well as a master’s degree in Interdisciplinary Studies. She was named Nazareth Academy’s Educator of the Year in 2016.
“My goal of encouraging students to become lifelong learners is aligned with Nazareth’s belief in educating the whole student in order to empower him or her throughout his or her life journey,” she said in a statement.
“Ms. García is a testament to the fact that teachers can have the highest expectations of their students while also creating positive, impactful relationships with them so that they know they are supported and cared for,” said Nazareth Principal Therese Hawkins. “Ms. García’s passion for literature and her masterful skills at facilitating deep, thought-provoking discussion are second to none. She is an admired and much loved member of the Nazareth Academy Family and we are bursting with pride at this recognition.”
The Golden Apple Foundation describes itself as the leading Illinois nonprofit committed to preparing, honoring and supporting educators who advance educational opportunities for students.
The Golden Apple Awards honor outstanding teachers for having lasting, positive effects on students’ lives and school communities. Teacher finalists demonstrate — in their teaching and results — significant, positive impact on their students’ growth and learning.
“These last two years have truly taken a toll on teachers, staff, families, and students,” said Alan Mather, President of Golden Apple. “While great teachers have always been impactful, this is particularly true during this past year, where these finalists have demonstrated the commitment to providing ongoing support and high-quality instruction to their students and we are proud to honor them.”
