We made it through ‘til mid-January. We celebrate Martin Luther King Jr. Day on Monday, Jan. 17. His actual birthday was Jan. 15, but we observe it on the third Monday of January each year.
We celebrated the Epiphany (Three Kings Day) on Jan. 6. The Jan. 6 date is traditional, but our neighboring Catholic churches celebrated on Sunday, Jan. 2. The day represents the Magi, the three wise men, finding the newborn King and bringing gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh. Had it been three wise women, they would have brought diapers, formula and casseroles! (I stole that joke from social media.)
In commemoration of that day, 23rd Ward Ald. Silvana Tabares’ office joined members of the Alliance of Hispanic Law Enforcement delivered toys to WINGS, an organization that helps domestic violence victims.
There seems to be a lot of COVID-19 testing facilities popping up around our area. Please be aware that some of these sites may not be official. Some suggestions to avoid fraud are never giving out your Social Security number, credit card number or insurance information.
My quest to find the Dove candy shop in Archer Heights proved successful. The location was 4958 S. Pulaski, per the July 1975 Yellow Pages (as archived by the Library of Congress). That location sounds about right too, per my memory. I want to thank Ken and his wife Lory for making the suggestion to hit the phone books.
Speaking of Archer Heights, thanks go out to Ann and Stan Lihosit, for all the work they have done, through the years with the Archer Heights Civic Association. The Lihosits, through a not-so-easy decision, will be moving out of Archer Heights. The AHCA newsletter lists all of their achievements, such as chairing the Easter egg hunt and Halloween party, doing so since the days their children attended. Both of these events will need volunteers, if interested please call (773) 843-2232. Stan will remain as “Counsel to the President” and will keep in touch via Zoom meetings and conference calls.
The Lihosits have worked for years to make St. Bruno Parish and the larger Archer Heights neighborhood better places, and their efforts were a big success.
The Archer Heights Civic Association is the oldest neighborhood organization in Chicago. It was founded in 1938. They are involved in local transportation, public safety, education and commerce, to name a few things. I have always heard they are the best because of their leadership.
