Oak Lawn police arrest Chicago man in road rage shooting

A Chicago man has been charged in the road rage shooting on May 10 near 107th Street and Cicero Avenue in Oak Lawn that left a man fighting for his life.
Oak Lawn police detectives and U.S. Customs agents arrested Mario Mallard, 36, on Sunday at O’Hare International Airport after he returned from the Dominican Republic.
“This is the kind of result we’ve come to expect from our Police Department,” said 5th District Trustee Bud Stalker whose district borders the intersection. “When you support your police and let them do their jobs, good things will happen.”
The victim is recovering from surgery at Advocate Christ Medical Center and hospital officials said the officers’ quick response likely saved his life.
According to Oak Lawn Police Chief Dan Vittorio, two men began shouting at each other from their vehicles while driving in the southbound lanes near 105th and Cicero about 6 p.m. on May 10. The driver of a white SUV pulled into a parking lot at 106th Place, while the other man pulled into a lot at 107th Street, according to Vittorio.
One man began to exit his truck to continue the argument with the driver of the SUV. It was at this point, the driver of the SUV drew a weapon and shot the victim twice, according to Vittorio. He was taken to Christ and underwent emergency surgery.
Oak Lawn police happened to be in the area. They tried to stop the SUV, along with members of the Alsip police. Police then pursued the driver of the SUV, who drove onto I-294 going southbound.
The shooter was reportedly driving over 100 miles per hour and police then decided to end the pursuit.
Charges of aggravated battery with a firearm were approved by the Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office.
Mallard appeared in court Monday and his bail was set at $250,000. He remains in custody at Cook County Jail.
His next scheduled court date is June 7 at the Bridgeview Courthouse.
