Summit woman dies in Riverside car crash

A Summit woman was killed and four other people were injured in a crash Saturday night in Riverside.
Samantha Nieves, 23, died in the crash that occurred at about 8 p.m. April 30 near First Avenue and Waubansee Road, Riverside Director of Public Safety Matthew Buckley said in a release.
Buckley said a Chevy Malibu, which was carrying Nieves and the driver, was headed northbound on First Avenue when it collided with a GMC sports utility vehicle, carrying three people, which was traveling southbound at the time of the crash.
Both vehicles sustained extensive damage.
Nieves was a front seat passenger in the Malibu and had to be extricated from the car by firefighters from Riverside, Lyons and McCook. She suffered fatal injuries in the collision.
The other four people suffered non-life-threatening injuries and were taken to MacNeal and Loyola hospitals for treatment by ambulances from Lyons, Berwyn, Brookfield, North Riverside and the Pleasantview Fire Protection District.
The West Suburban Major Crimes Task Force Major Crash Investigation Team is assisting Riverside police with the accident reconstruction. This is currently an active investigation.
No citations or criminal charges have been filed.
First Avenue was shut down to traffic between Ogden and Forest avenues until about 1 a.m. on May 1 as police processed the crash scene.
