The students behind Harold L. Richards High School’s “Bulldog Dispatch” have earned a spot on the national stage, and their adviser couldn’t be prouder.

“These students are so impressive,” said Aaron Vermedal, the school’s digital media teacher and “Bulldog Dispatch” adviser. “They continue to go above and beyond on their path of learning to be great storytellers. The amount of work and effort they contribute to our crew is exceptional. I am so lucky to be surrounded by students like these.”

The school’s news magazine program has been nominated for Outstanding Magazine Program in the 2026 National Student Production Awards, presented by the Foundation of the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences (NATAS). It is the first time Richards has received a national nomination in the competition.

The nomination comes after “Bulldog Dispatch” won a Chicago/Midwest NATAS Crystal Pillar Award last May, earning the program a place in the national competition.

The nominated entry is the show’s January newscast, which featured stories about Richards’ Special Olympics basketball team, a student author and the challenges wrestlers face when managing their weight.

Students named in the nomination are 2026 graduate Alondra German, junior Grady Gilhooly and senior Grace Tresch. Vermedal submitted the entry on behalf of the program.

Richards Principal MaLinda Majoch said the nomination reflects the talent and dedication students bring to each episode.

“Richards’ Bulldog Dispatch, with the leadership of Mr. Vermedal, consistently produces outstanding work,” Majoch said. “Our students’ talent shines through in each and every episode. These young people are thoughtful, creative, and incredibly competent. To be recognized at the national level is a huge honor for our school.”

The national competition drew more than 350 winning entries from NATAS regional chapters. High school students from across the country were recognized in 28 programming and craft categories. Entries will be judged by industry professionals and media academics.

Richards students said the nomination recognizes the work they put into reporting stories, developing their production skills and bringing the school community’s stories to viewers.

Winners of the 2026 National Student Production Awards will be announced Nov. 20 beginning at noon Central time on the NATAS YouTube channel.
