Julianna A. Al Maghrabi

A 20-year-old Chicago woman is charged with trying to take a car from a 63-year-old woman with a disability in a Hickory Hills grocery store parking lot, police said.

Julianna A. Al Maghrabi was charged with one count of aggravated vehicular hijacking after review by the Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office, according to Hickory Hills police.

Officers were called about 9:24 p.m. Oct. 13 to a reported carjacking in the Jewel-Osco parking lot at 9528 S. Roberts Road, near 95th Street, police said.

The woman was sitting in the front passenger seat of her vehicle while her son was inside the store, according to police. A woman got into the driver’s seat, threatened to shoot her if she did not get out and pushed her while trying to force her out, police said.

The woman’s son came back to the lot, pulled the suspect from the vehicle and held her until officers arrived, police said. Al Maghrabi was taken into custody at the scene. Police said no gun was found.

Investigators interviewed witnesses and Al Maghrabi and reviewed surveillance and body-worn camera video, according to police.

Police credited the son’s quick action with protecting his mother and allowing officers to arrest the suspect immediately.

Earlier the same day, officers responded to reports of attempted kidnappings in the same shopping center. Police said those incidents were not related to the carjacking.

Police said there is no known ongoing threat to the community.
