The Roberts Park Fire Protection District drew 15 people to its first Senior Safety Sundae on Sunday, Sept. 27, an afternoon of fire safety and fall prevention training for older residents that ended with ice cream.

The event was held at the district’s Station 1, 8611 S. Roberts Road in Justice. Firefighter/paramedics from the district gave a presentation on home fire safety and fall prevention, according to Lt. Rebecca Scanlon. Attendees then took a hands-on lesson in using a fire extinguisher.

Three outside organizations joined the event, Scanlon said:

• A Medicare presenter gave information about Medicare, upcoming changes to the program and open enrollment.

• Aging Care Connections described programs, services and resources for older adults and their families.

• Cook County Sheriff’s Police talked about personal safety, crime prevention and how seniors can protect themselves from scams.

The sheriff’s police donated the door prize: two admission tickets to Brookfield Zoo.

The district has scheduled a Fire Prevention Open House for all ages from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 4, also at Station 1. Planned activities include station tours, live demonstrations, hands-on activities for children and fire safety education, according to the district.
