What does it mean to serve your community?
That question will be at the heart of Palos Park Mayor Nicole Milovich-Walters’ second annual “Women Making a Difference: The Power of Service in Your Community” event Oct. 12 at Moraine Valley Community College.
The event brings together four women with different paths in public service and community work, giving attendees an opportunity to hear about the experiences that have shaped their work and the people they have served along the way.
Mariyana Spyropoulos, Clerk of the Circuit Court of Cook County, will deliver the keynote address. She then will join Cook County Circuit Court Judge Bernadette Barrett, Illinois State Rep. Nicole La Ha and Mona Purdy, founder of Share Your Soles, for the panel discussion.
The panelists represent different sides of community service, from elected office and the courts to nonprofit work. They will share their experiences and discuss what motivates them to remain involved in their communities.
Milovich-Walters hosted the inaugural event last year as a way to bring women together for a meaningful conversation about service and leadership.
The event will begin with a complimentary lunch at 11:30 a.m., followed by the discussion at noon. Admission is free, but registration is required.
A new mini-symposium will follow the panel this year, giving attendees a chance to connect with local organizations, learn about volunteer opportunities and discover causes they may want to support.
Organizations interested in participating can register to host a table during the mini-symposium.
The event will be held Monday, Oct. 12, at Moraine Valley Community College, 9000 W. College Parkway, Palos Hills.
The event hopes to turn inspiration into action by connecting attendees with people, organizations and causes already making a difference close to home.
